The piercing call of the sika stag is enough to make the hair stand up on the neck of the staunchest hunter. 

Experiencing the excitement of hunting sika during the rut is special, and in particular at Poronui -a name synonymous with sika deer in New Zealand.  Renowned as one of the most challenging of deer species to hunt, you will have to earn that trophy.  But what a trophy it will be!  Whether alive or as a trophy on your wall sika have real attitude and you will remember the hunt for a very long time.

Poronui is where sika were first liberated in New Zealand more than 100 years ago and remains the centre of the sika range.  Our free range hunting is second to none.  Quite simply, more high quality free range trophies are taken on Poronui than any other New Zealand property. 

If that’s not enough, the extensive 3,000 acre game estate is home to high quality red stag hunting, fallow and rusa deer as well as sika.  A superb habitat, the hunting is challenging yet achievable.  The mosaic of native beech forest, exotic pine or eucalypt plantations and grass and shrub lands creates a stunning landscape.  Framed by the magnificent wilderness of the Kaimanawa Mountains it is easy to understand that you are part of a unique hunting experience.



The rut is in the pinnacle of the hunter’s year.  In most cases it is over all too soon.  Not on Poronui though!  The bellowing roar of massive red stags signals the start of the trophy season in March.  These world class trophies dominate the hunting scene until mid April.   Sika add their high octave vocalizing and often can be heard well into May.  The gruff grunt of rutting Fallow joins the mix in May and June.  With Rusa rutting well into August there are exciting trophy hunting opportunities available almost year round, whether you are up for the challenge of free range hunting or prefer Safari hunting on a game park.

A trophy is more than skin and bone.  It is a treasured memory of a challenging hunt, of superb company and of surroundings to dream of coming back to.  Poronui evokes a unique response – almost indescribable but never forgotten.  Truly a special place to hunt.
