Poronui Wilderness

The “Poronui experience” is quite unique, and it is easy to identify what makes being at Poronui so special.  It is simply the land, with an amazing collection of environmental and wilderness values wrapped up in one property.  Just being there is seen by many visitors as good enough reason to go back year after year.  The fishing and hunting are wonderful, but it is the environment in which these activities take place that provides the special Poronui magic.  It is also why Poronui appeals to so many - whether young, old, hunters, fishers, hikers, or wildlife enthusiasts who just want to explore and experience wild New Zealand.

Flora and Fauna

Six thousand acres of old growth beech forest show off New Zealand as it used to be, a reminder of the magnificence of virgin native forest.  Away from the beech forest, open grasslands and mixed-species forest stands provide ideal habitat for deer - and an open expanse for walkers - while the myriad of trails are perfect for mountain biking and horseback riding.

The property is also home to trophy red stags, wild Sika deer, ducks and pheasants, making the area a regular attraction to hunters from all corners of the world. Guests interested in natural history will find an intriguing array of flora and fauna unique to New Zealand.

Poronui Water

Poronui is home to two outstanding rivers, the Taharua and Mohaka, which meander through the property’s rugged terrain before heading towards the Pacific Ocean.

In the mountains adjacent to Poronui are many rivers and streams abundant in brown and rainbow trout, providing some of the best fly fishing in the world. These can be easily accessed by helicopter for an exhilarating fly fishing experience.

The Taharua River and associated riparian wetlands are high value environmental sites.  A cold, clear spring-fed stream, the Taharua follows a sinuous path through high frost flats and riparian wetlands.  A wide range of wildlife can be viewed while walking the streamside trails.

Scenic wilderness view

If 16,000 acres of wilderness is not enough room to keep you entertained, Poronui is the entry point to the magnificent Kaimanawa mountain range.  Fly out by helicopter and hike back, the perfect way to experience more of the Central North Island wilderness.
